Wireless Routers

Wireless connections can be an excellent way to reduce messy wires around the office but there is a downside.

- Usually speeds will suffer unless you get a high quality fast
wireless hub. Average speeds for a standard hub (54mbps) are
around the 1-2 meg mark depending on distance and signal strength.

- Security : Your security maybe compromised if your router is
not setup correctly, even with WPA2 there can still be ways for
someone to gain access onto your system and use your
  bandwidth illegally.

Virtual Private Networks

These used to be a lot more common but now Remote Desktop and Exchange/OWA there is not as much requirement. Internet speeds are so high you can remote control the actual PC that you need to work on now without any noticable delay. This negates the requirement to connect purely to the data now, although some systems still require this kind of access for certain applications.

There are cheaper alternatives to a 2003 / 2008 Server VPN setup, some take little effort to achieve ultimate protection and full encryption / encapsulation) can be done with minimal setup charges and time.
